For many years I ignored the need for a cable bag and as a result, all of my cables were pressed down in one big mess into my bag. However, roughly two years ago I decided to make a change and I started to look for the perfect cable bag, that could organize all cables related to my Iphone, Macbook and Canon 70D. In the end, I found the California-based company AER, which sells many sleek travel-related products.
My choice fell on the AER Cable Kit 2.

As someone who’s done a fair bit of traveling, I understand the need for a reliable way to organize cables and tech essentials, and having used it for more than 2 years now, I feel that I am in a position to give you an honest review of the long time usage of AER Cable Kit 2.

Pros

Cons

  • High-quality materials and construction

  • Spacious with various compartments

  • Padded pocket to fit more sensitive items
  • A bit too pricey for a budget traveler

  • Somewhat bulky

Verdict

Although the AER Cable Kit 2 is somewhat expensive, particularly for those in the European Union, I believe it’s a valuable investment that will last for many years, possibly decades. Its size might come off as a bit bulky, but achieving a slimmer design without sacrificing durability and weather-resistant features seems unlikely. It’s an excellent choice for anyone carrying multiple devices and cables, whether for office commutes or travel adventures.

Design and Build Quality

The AER Cable Kit 2, true to AER’s reputation, perfectly blends practicality with style. Available exclusively in classic black, it’s made from sturdy 840D nylon with a weather-resistant carbonate polyurethane coating and reinforced with 1680D Cordura® ballistic nylon on the sides. This robust construction gives it a somewhat bulky feel but also adds to its durability and premium feel. The zippers are well-crafted and easy to use, though at 6-7 cm, they are a bit long and can be a bit clanky. The weather-resistant coating of the AER Cable Kit 2 effectively protects against rain, a feature I can personally vouch for.

Overall, the AER Cable Kit 2 offers a stylish design and solid build quality, making it suitable for various trips, from office commutes to demanding outdoor activities like hiking or trekking. Having used it regularly for the past year, I can attest that it still feels like new.

Storage and Features

The AER Cable Kit 2, with its dual compartments and a total volume of 1.8 L, adeptly accommodates all your cables. As a frequent traveler with both my DSLR camera and MacBook Pro, I can confidently assert that the Cable Kit 2 comfortably fits all associated cables.

The left-hand outer compartment is designed as a foldable clamshell pocket, equipped with several pockets for small accessories like extra memory cards. My personal favorite is the padded pocket measuring 18 cm x 10 cm, ideal for safeguarding delicate items such as an external hard drive or an iPhone. Central to the clamshell is a pair of elastic bands, perfect for additional cables, and another elastic band along the outer edge suitable for a pen. Adjacent to this is another elastic pocket, large enough for a computer mouse. Although I seldom use a mouse with my MacBook on the go, this pocket is a great fit for my bulkier European MacBook Pro Extension Cable.

Regarding portability, the AER Cable Kit 2 features a handle on the back, facilitating easy carrying or retrieval from your backpack. Ensure all zippers are securely closed, as the compartments will be upside down when holding the handle.

Progressing to the main compartment, it’s spacious enough to accommodate at least two MacBook chargers side by side. In this compartment, I typically store my MacBook charger and my Canon LC E6 battery charger. There are also two extra pockets within, convenient for storing more cables or AirPods.

Lastly, the Cable Kit 2 features a quick-access back pocket, ideal for items you need to retrieve swiftly, without opening the clamshell or main compartment. However, in my nearly two years of using the kit, I’ve mainly used this side pocket for additional cable storage, rather than for anything particularly special.

Price

AER, being based in and shipping from San Francisco, USA, means that ordering to the European Union (like I did) can be somewhat costly. The shipping fee alone is €25, and there’s also the need to pay duty taxes upon importing the product. This can increase the total cost to between €90-100, depending on your location. Currently, AER includes duty taxes at checkout, a change from when I ordered, where I received a separate bill for the duty tax from the government, which was 20% of the product’s value for Sweden.

On the other hand, if you’re in the US, the AER Cable Kit 2 is more affordable, costing around $50 with free shipping on orders over $90.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the AER Cable Kit 2 stands out as a highly functional and stylish accessory for any traveler or tech enthusiast. Its well-thought-out design and durable build quality make it a reliable companion for all kinds of trips, while it has ample storage capacity. Although the price point may be higher for European customers, the quality and functionality it offers justify the investment. For those in the US, the more affordable price, coupled with free shipping, makes it an even more attractive option. Overall, the AER Cable Kit 2 is a valuable tool for keeping tech gadgets and cables neatly organized and protected, making it a worthwhile addition to anyone’s travel gear.
